The Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific, which fell out of the top three in World’s Top 10 Airlines ranking due to mismanagement, is the only airline operating non-stop flights between New York JFK and Hong Kong.

On Oct. 12, CX841 flew 16,681 Km, becoming the longest flight ever of Cathay Pacific's commercial flight. This recording-breaking flight detoured the Atlantic Ocean and Europe instead of the traditional Pacific Ocean route. Though flight distance was increased, it only took 17 hours to arrive in Hong Kong due to the strong tailwind, which was shorter than average. Airlines usually select flight routes before departure based on factors such as forecasted weather conditions.
On Oct. 18, this flight made a stop at Taipei Taoyuan Airport, Taiwan. As a west-bond flight, the extremely strong headwind tremendously reduced speed, resulting shortage of fuel. Thus, the aircraft landed in Taipei to refuel. I think it's not an urgent rough decision, as the divert information was announced just hours after departure from JFK. This route may also be pre-selected.
